The “2nd National Biotechnology Student Summit” organized in cooperation with our University and the Biotechnology Association took place at the Congress and Culture Center. At the summit, which was held before the “19th National Biotechnology Congress with International Participation” to be hosted by our University on December 01-03, 2017, current developments in the field of biotechnology were shared with students and new business ideas were also discussed.
Speaking at the opening of the summit, Biotechnology Association President Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Avni Öktem thanked the entire team, especially our University Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Çabuk, for their contributions to the organization of the summit. Stating that our country is going through a difficult period and that our most valuable asset to get out of this is our youth, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Avni Öktem stated that they organize such meetings to bring young people closer to knowledge, knowledge production and technology. Stating that technology is the trump card in today’s competition between countries and that therefore countries now need to create their own knowledge and technology, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Avni Öktem noted that the generation that will create this is today's youth. Thanking the young people who attended the summit for their participation, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Avni Öktem wished them a successful and beautiful event.
Our University President Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen said that biotechnology, which covers all areas within the application area of life sciences and is a widespread application area from health to agriculture, environment to energy, has recently increased its impact value by advancing together with information technologies. Stating that as a university, they aim to contribute to biotechnology studies in our country by giving priority to both undergraduate and graduate education programs and R&D activities, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen also noted that they were pleased to host the 2nd National Biotechnology Student Summit. Stating that universities with strong basic sciences can keep the sector dynamic by directing technology with the knowledge they produce, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen said that the basic element for this is the training of qualified human resources. Pointing out that time should not be lost in the process of producing local and national technologies, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen asked the young people to manage their time well by trusting in the education they receive and being aware of our country’s priorities and to follow the developments taking place in the world these days. Stating that the loss of 14 billion dollars that we pay abroad every year to procure medical devices and equipment is one of the most concrete indicators of our country’s need for advanced technologies, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen said that after the process of meeting our need for biotechnological products through the work to be done by young people under the leadership of professors who have a say in their fields accelerates, we will now be able to strengthen our knowledge-based economic model as a country that directs technology. Noting that they are pleased to host young people from 14 different universities at our university, which continues its studies with the understanding of “From the Past to the Future, From Knowledge to Value”, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen stated that our university, which hosted the 14th National Biotechnology Congress in 2005, has continued its cooperation with the Biotechnology Association for many years and that they are happy and honored to organize another Biotechnology Congress together during this process. Biotechnology Association President Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Hasan Gönen thanked Hüseyin Avni Öktem for his close interest and cooperation and concluded his speech by wishing the event to be useful and productive.
The opening session was concluded with the presentation titled “Biotechnology and the Future” by Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Avni Öktem, President of the Biotechnology Association, and the scientific session was started after the break.
